Ghost Town

As I've mentioned before, I work at a company that has offices near the Waco Regional Airport. At lunchtime today, my coworker and I went for a walk, about two blocks down to the terminal, then took a left. It's very quiet there, bluebonnets popping up in the grassy fields. And there are old roads, with hardly any asphalt left on them, criss-crossing through the fields. We stopped to look at an old cement foundation, and my coworker mentioned that is was the foundation of one of the houses cleared out for the airport.
We continued on with our walk and came upon this bed of irises, overgrown with grass. Some of the irises were blooming and we picked some to take back to our desks. It seemed sad, this was some one's garden. This was someone's house.
Back at the office, I couldn't get the little garden and the concrete foundations out of my mind. I spent some time studying the map, and it was clear to me that the little roads with hardly any asphalt left were once Avenue A, B and C. A search for "Waco Regional Airport" revealed that this was previously a training facility for WWII, called Blackland Army Flying Field. I couldn't actually find out if the little houses were part of the army post, or a community that grew up around it. I wasn't even sure if the city had cleared out the homes for the airport, or because of the possibility of flooding from Lake Waco just yards away.
